A hot spring resort that continues from the middle of the Edo period, it named "Meiji" because it "cures clearly". Mellow hot water with an irony and sour taste.

The facility has a bathtub where you can see "Oshidori-gakushi Falls" and a waterfall shower with non-heated spring water flowing from the source. From the bathtubs, you can enjoy the seasonal scenery with fresh green in spring, cool mountain stream in summer, autumn leaves in autumn, snow and mysterious ice objects in winter.

There are scenic spots such as Yokoya Gorge and Mishaka Pond within walking distance.

  • The price of JR Express is "Base fare" plus "Express charge". (These are determined according to the distance.) In case of JR Express on Chuo Line, "Express charge" has two types: "Reserved seat" and "Undecided seat". Both have the same charge, which do not change depending on the season. However, the price will vary depending on where you buy. (Internet < Station < Inside the car). If you have an "Undecided seat" ticket, you can sit in any vacant seat, but you have no priority. So, if someone comes who has a "Reserved seat" ticket for the seat you are sitting, you have to give up the seat to him / her.
  • ALPICO Kotsu route buses often operate only during certain seasons or on specific days.

Also, if you would like to take a walk through the whole of Yokoya Gorge, get off at Yokoyakyo Iriguchi Bus Stop and go up from there. However, you cannot walk with sandals or high heels in Yokoya Gorge, and it is dangerous to walk in bad weather or after evening. In addition, there is a river between Yokoya Gorge and Meiji-onsen, and there is a board to cross. But when the water increases, you may be difficult to cross it.

Characters

Nishi-san
Nishi-san
He is an orthodox hot springs lover and particular about quality of springs. He loves the hot springs flowing from the source, the hot water with a presence, and the rustic atmosphere.
Kita-san
Kita-san
He doesn't care much about quality of hot springs. He loves the open-air bath, and prefers hot springs that have visible features such as good views.

(→ Continuation from Tateshina Onsen Ishiyasunoyu)
Today Nishi-san and Kita-san are in Tateshina Plateau. They plan to visit Meiji-onsen in the afternoon, but on the way, they will visit waterfalls in Yokoya Gorge.

Otome Falls in Yokoya Gorge

Otome Falls in Yokoya Gorge

The first waterfall is Otome Falls, just near the entrance to Yokoya Gorge.

Wow! Quite impressive! I can come so close.

Not many waterfalls you can get up to here. The water splashes on my lens.

There is Kirifuri Falls when you walk about 10 minutes from Otome Falls. The road is still gentle.

Kirifuri Falls in Yokoya Gorge

Kirifuri Falls in Yokoya Gorge

Oh, this is Kirifuri Falls.

Well, it's beautiful. Oh, this river is reddish, so it looks like having a lot of iron.

Boy, that's what it is? ...Oh? Didn't you just say that the green has a lot of iron?

It will be green but it will be red too. In short, it's a mystery of nature.

Realy?

Further up the Yokoya Gorge. Looking at the Otaki Falls, then the last one is Oshidori-gakushi Falls. When you come to this point, the path is a full-scale mountain path, so Nishi-san and Kita-san are walking out of breath.

Oshidori-gakushi Falls in Yokoya Gorge

Oshidori-gakushi Falls in Yokoya Gorge

Now we've arrived! Oshidori-gakushi Falls! ... But, not like a waterfall.

It's like a mountain stream, but the scenery is pretty good. Oh, the other side is Meiji-onsen.

Then, to cross this river ... that bridge, you know. Alright, let's go!

It's not a bridge, just a board. If it rains and water increases, we'll not be able to cross.

Yokoya Gorge is a promenade along the mountain stream of Shibu River flowing through Tateshina Plateau. They say it has full of negative ions.

Meiji-onsen exterior

Exterior

Oshidori-gakushi Falls is a charming waterfall, but Nishi-san and Kita-san go to Meiji-onsen so soon. Crossing the river, and then they've finally arrived at the Meiji-onsen.

Meiji-onsen bathtub

Bathtub

In the bathing room, it has a waterfall shower, a washing area and a main bathtub. And "Waterfall View open-air bath" in the back. At first, they try to the main bathtub.

Oh, it's reddish-brown.

Right. That's why, after all, it has It has a lot of iron.

Hey, that's my line ...

Meiji-onsen hot water spout

Hot water spout

The sunlight shining through the large windows makes the hot water of the bathtub shine bright orange.

After all, it's nice the weather is good. The bathtub is sparkling.

Exactly. I wish this was the flowing from the source.

Meiji-onsen washing area

Washing area

Well, that's not a big deal. The atmosphere in the bathing room is good.

You don't get it! ...By the way, I've been curious about that waterfall shower. Is it the source water?

Nishi-san go to the waterfall shower.

Meiji-onsen was discovered in the middle of the Edo period, and the inn has opened in 1888.

Meiji-onsen waterfall shower

Waterfall shower with source water

Wow, it's cold! ...Oh? it smells sulfur ...

Gee, it's cold ... Then, I don't get in it.

Oh! Iron taste and a bit sour! It's a good source! Though it's a bit cold, I'll try to get in.

Why do you have an interest in taking a cold bath?

OK, after all the flowing from the source is fresh. It sharpens me up.

What sharpens you up is because cold water.

Meiji-onsen waterfall view bathtub

"Waterfall View open-air bath"

Next, Nishi-san and Kita-san head for the "Waterfall View open-air bath".

What? It's not an open-air bath, you know.

Well, not an open-air bath, this is.

Gee, It's a demerit that it's not an open-air bath ... At least, let's open the window.

Oh, it's Oshidori-gakushi Falls that you can see below. It's correct to see a waterfall.

No open-air bath ...

Well, that's not a big deal. The outside view is also nice.

You don't get it!

Meiji-onsen lobby

Lobby

Nishi-san and Kita-san have different evaluation points for hot springs, but they enjoyed the hot spring of Meiji-onsen. They were relaxing in the lobby after taking a bath.

(August 2015)

The waterfall shower is the source water, and its temperature is about 25 ℃ (77 ℉).

Impression & rating

The hot water of the bathtub is not fresh, but the water of waterfall shower has a clear iron odor, iron taste and acidity.

Impression & rating

It's a shame that the "Waterfall View open-air bath" is not really an open-air bath. But the overall atmosphere may be calm and nice.

Mishaka Pond
Mishaka Pond

Mishaka Pond

Mishaka Pond is located close to the Meiji-onsen Iriguchi Bus Stop. This pond became famous because HIGASHIYAMA Kaii (Japanese famous artist of paintings) drew it with a painting called "Green echos". The aspect changes depending on the season, weather, time of day, and other conditions. If the conditions are right, you will be able to see a wonderful landscape.
