Characters

Nishi-san
Nishi-san
He is an orthodox hot springs lover and particular about quality of springs. He loves the hot springs flowing from the source, the hot water with a presence, and the rustic atmosphere.
Kita-san
Kita-san
He doesn't care much about quality of hot springs. He loves the open-air bath, and prefers hot springs that have visible features such as good views.

(→ Continuation from Kabutoyu-onsen Sansuiro)
Next, Nishi-san and Kita-san went to "Motoyu Tamagawakan".

We've arrived. So quaint inn, you know.

Exactly. It's so vintage.

Oh, there seems to be a cafe here. ... Hmmm, "Honey butter toast" is fascinating.

Then, why don't we go later?

They got into the hall right away.

Oh, that's nice! Let's see, the taste is great!

Exactly. And, old but well maintained.

After finishing the reception, they went to the bathing room.

Bathtub

Hey, it's fairly big. The windows are big too.

Bathtub, floor, ceiling, all are made from wood. Maybe japanese cypress.

It's a pity that there is no open-air bath, but OK because you can see the outside scenery well. Good hot spring, you know.

Strictly speaking, it's not a hot spring.

What!? Really?

In short, it's called a hot spring because the water is alkaline. But legally, alkaline alone is not recognized as a hot spring.

Ah, I see ... But wait, if it's acidic, it's a hot spring, right?

The area around Nanasawa Onsen-kyo has Nanasawa Forest Park and Forest Therapy Roads, which is recommended for mountain walking and hiking. (For Forest Therapy, refer to the Forest Therapy Society website.)

Yes, if it's acidic enough, it'll be a hot spring.

It's unfair that acidic is a hot spring but alkaline is not. Why?

Well ... Let me see ... I never thought about it ...

Come to think of it, alkaline should be recognized as a hot spring. Absolutely.

Hmmm, exactly, they say alkaline hot water is good for beautiful skin ...

They went out to the break room after the bath.

Break room

Oh! It's pretty good!

A porch, a garden ... Exactly nice.

Front garden
(View from the break room)

Perhaps the best in the break room runking, I've been to. How can I explain it? Good old Japan? I want to relax here all the time.

Huh? Didn't you say that eat "so-and-so toast"?

Oh! I forgot it! ... Okay, after chilling out here for another 10 minutes, let's go eat "honey ... so-and so toast"!

When 1 mg or more of hydrogen ions are contained in 1 kg of hot spring water, it is classified as an acidic hot spring.

Nishi-san and Kita-san relaxed in the break room while looking at the garden. Cicadas who can't wait for the end of the rainy season are singing in the distance. Prompted by that, the time in Nanasawa Forest seems to be progressing slowly.

(July 2020)

"Honey butter toast" is used gentle local ingredients (NoPell's bread, Yagishitaen's honey).

Impression & rating

The building, which is a relocated old folk house, is quaint. And you can feel at home as if you were visiting a relative's house in the countryside.

Impression & rating

There is no open-air bath, so the score is low, but the atmosphere at the break room is great! It is worth coming for the purpose of taking a break here.

Koganei Sake Brewery is very close to the Nanasawa Onsen Iriguchi Bus Stop. They are making the craft beer "Sagami Beer" with underground water at the foot of Mt. Higashitanzawa. Perhaps because of that, the overall taste is refreshing and easy to drink. Personally, the pale ale had a fruity flavor and was the most delicious.
