Sanogawa-onsen
3482-1, Ide, Nanbu Town, Minamikoma District, Yamanashi Pref.
In the quiet mountains, far from civilization, you can enjoy natural sulfur spring water in baths of different temperatures!
This is one of the few hot springs in Yamanashi Prefecture, the hot spring kingdom, where you can enjoy sulfur springs flowing from the source. The pleasant smell of sulfur hits you the moment you open the bathing room door. You can drink the spring water from the hot water spout.
The charge is reasonable, and there is a large open-air bath. Both the indoor and outdoor baths are divided into heated and unheated baths, so we recommend alternating between them.
This Onsen Ryokan is located in the quiet mountains, close to the Sano River, a tributary of the Fuji River. You're sure to feel relaxed as you soak in the hot water surrounded by the sounds of wild birds and the wind rustling the green trees.

- The price of JR Express and normal Shinkansen is "Basic fare" plus "(Super) Express charge".
(These are determined according to the distance.)
"(Super) Express charge" has two types: Reserved seat and Non-reserved seat.
Reserved seat charge adds ¥930 (during the busiest season), ¥730 (during the busy season), ¥530 (during the normal season) or ¥330 (during the off season) to Non-reserved seat charge.
(For details, please refer to JR East_Ticketing and Busiest / Busy / Normal / Off season calendar.)
However, for certain sections of the Minobu Line, Reserved seat charge may be higher than this calculation result. (Because Non-reserved seat charge is set lower than normal.) - On the JR Minobu Line, you cannot use the IC card tickets such as Suica, PASMO and so on.
- Nanbu Town Buses allow you to get on and off at locations other than bus stops. If you tell the driver your destination, he/she will likely stop the bus at the best possible spot.
- The above fares are based on cash. When using an IC card, the fares may differ slightly.
- The above times and distances are approximate. Does not include transfering or waiting times.

Travel journal of day trip bathing to hot spring
Characters
- Nishi-san
- He is an orthodox hot springs lover and particular about quality of springs. He loves the hot springs flowing from the source, the hot water with a presence, and the rustic atmosphere.
- Kita-san
- He doesn't care much about quality of hot springs. He loves the open-air bath, and prefers hot springs that have visible features such as good views.
It's the beginning of December, and today's day trip hot spring is Sanogawa-onsen. It's located in Nanbu Town, Yamanashi Prefecture, close to the border with Shizuoka Prefecture. Nishi-san and Kita-san have just arrived at Sanogawa-onsen Ryokan, about a 30-minute walk from JR Toshima Station.
Autumn leaves near the entrance of Sanogawa-onsen Ryokan
Wow, autumn leaves! They're dazzling, you know.
Exactly. There are still autumn leaves even in December. I thought it would be earlier since it's Yamanashi.
Maybe the hot springs make it so warm that the leaves change color later.
That can't be true... No, maybe it is?
exterior
Putting the truth about the autumn leaves aside, they headed inside the building. The souvenir shop and break room were in front, and the bathing room was on the left.
indoor bath
Wow, the bathtub is bigger than I thought.
Mmm, what a strong sulfur smell. This is great...
There are two baths. Um, one is "Drinkable flowing from the source" and the other one is "Heated flowing from the source". So that means...
In short, both are flowing from the source, and this one is not heated.
Nishi-san and Kita-san got into the unheated bathtub.
indoor bath
It's lukewarm.
Exactly. But it's nice water. Wait, does this have fine bubbles in it? That's nice.
Then, about the heated one is... Yes, it's just right. Temperature-wise, this one is the best.
Next they went out to the open-air bath.
open-air bath
That looks like a pretty nice open-air bath, you know.
This is also divided into heated and unheated. So, let's start with the unheated one.
open-air bath hot water spout
Without heated is... Oh, no, it's fine in the summer, but it's too lukewarm at this time of year.
You could say that. And, the open-air bath weakens the sulfur smell, that is a bit disappointing.
So Nishi-san seemed to like the unheated indoor bath, while Kita-san liked the heated open-air bath. After thoroughly enjoying the waters of Sanogawa-onsen, they took a break after the bath.
break room
It was a nice bath. Especially since it's been a while since I've been to a hot spring with such a strong sulfur smell.
And the open-air bath was surprisingly good. It was a minor hot spring so I didn't have high expectations, but it was actually pretty good, you know.
The scenery in this garden is also pretty nice. There is a pond and the leaves are changing color.
Oh, you can go outside from there! How about having beer to cool off?
Well, not a bad idea.
♨
Nanbu Town is surrounded by Shizuoka Prefecture to the east, west, and south.
So the climate may be similar to that of Shizuoka Prefecture.
For reference, the best time to see the autumn leaves in the Fukushigawa Valley in Nanbu Town is usually from mid-November to early December.
The pond in the garden
So, Nishi-san and Kita-san had bought some canned beer and head out to the terrace. Sipping beer while admiring the early winter scenery surrounding the pond was the perfect combination for cooling off after a bath. The cool, dry breeze that rustles the trees seemed to be a sign that full-blown winter was just around the corner.
(December 2023)
♨ This pond is called "Rainbow Trout Pond".
Impression & rating
The unheated hot spring bath is quite large. It has the drinkable and sulfur smell spring water, which is very satisfying.

Impression & rating
The facilities are bare minimum and it feels unpretentious. But the open-air bath is very tastefully designed.

Today's Detour
"Aburaya" - The old folk house cafe
Aburaya is a cafe within walking distance of JR Ide Station. They renovated the old folk house into a cafe. Apparently it was originally a house connected to SANO Yoko, author of the picture book "The Cat That Lived a Million Times". Perhaps because of this, there are times when a cat rests in front of the entrance.
There were many other well-worn items displayed everywhere, making it a very relaxing space. It has only been open for a short time, but it seems that the locals love it, which also contributes to the cozy atmosphere.
Their specialty chai has a spicier aroma than general one, so if you're a chai lover, I recommend you try it at least once.
