Yumura Onsen Tsue-onsen Koboyu
3-16-16, Yumura, Kofu City, Yamanashi Pref.
Enjoy the "Hot water for beautiful skin" that is unheated, flowing from the source at Yumura Onsen, which has a charming retro atmosphere!
The Rock bathtub (men's bath), Marble bathtub (women's bath) and Private bath all have unheated spring water flowing from the source. The gentle, slightly lukewarm water is weakly alkaline and is said to be good for the skin.
Legend has it that in 808, the hot spring gushed forth from the spot where Kobo Daishi (Buddhist monk) struck with his tsue (walking stick). The remains of the "Bathhouse of tsue" can still be seen at the rear of the building.
Yumura Onsen has ties to such literary figures as DAZAI Osamu and IBUSE Masuji. It has a rustic, retro feel that makes it so appealing. Attracted by this atmosphere, so many fans visit here almost every year.

- The price of JR Express is "Base fare" plus "Express charge". (These are determined according to the distance.) In case of JR Express on Chuo Line, "Express charge" has two types: "Reserved seat" and "Undecided seat". Both have the same charge, which do not change depending on the season. However, the price will vary depending on where you buy. (Internet < Station < Inside the car). If you have an "Undecided seat" ticket, you can sit in any vacant seat, but you have no priority. So, if someone comes who has a "Reserved seat" ticket for the seat you are sitting, you have to give up the seat to him / her.
- Kofu City Bicycle Rental is operated in cooperation with Kofu City and the Kofu Hotel Ryokan Cooperative. You can rent an electric assisted bicycle at some hotels around Kofu Station. From 9:00 to 18:00 (from November to March until 17:00), ¥1,000, ID card required, return to borrowed place. Inquiry: Kofu City Sightseeing Department 055-237-5702

Travel journal of day trip bathing to hot spring
Characters
- Nishi-san
- He is an orthodox hot springs lover and particular about quality of springs. He loves the hot springs flowing from the source, the hot water with a presence, and the rustic atmosphere.
- Kita-san
- He doesn't care much about quality of hot springs. He loves the open-air bath, and prefers hot springs that have visible features such as good views.
(→ Continuation from Yamamiya-onsen)
Nishi-san and Kita-san are in Kofu today. In the afternoon, they've headed to the historic hot spring resort of Yumura Onsen.
They are strolling down the main street "Yumura Onsen Dori".
Eh, Yumura Onsen seems a bit plain and deserted, you know.
Exactly. But it's a pretty old hot spring. They say that Kobo Daishi has founded it.
Kobo Daishi... Well... What kind of person?
An outstanding person.
…That's a rough explanation...
exterior
They've arrived at Tsue-onsen Koboyu. At the entrance, there is a life-size (estimated) panel of Kobo Daishi.
The life-size (estimated) panel of Kobo Daishi
Hey, this person is probably Kobo Daishi.
Hmm. He just looks like an old guy.
Koboyu has men's, women's and the private baths. The private bath was already in use by guests, so Nishi-san and Kita-san headed to the men's bath. To get there, you have to go up to the second floor and walk across the connecting corridor.
View picture from the second floor window
Oh, this corridor is above the street we were just walking down, you know.
See. Apparently you can see the southern Japan Alps from here.
View from the connecting corridor
Hmm, Well... In terms of scenery, it's a bit disappointing, right?
Exactly. I have no idea which mountain is which. What's the tallest one?
Ah, that tallest one is a utility pole.
♨ Currently, Yumura Onsen is undergoing redevelopment with the concept of "a hot spring town where you can stroll around in a yukata."
Go past the connecting corridor and down the stairs to reach the men's bath (rock bathtub).
men's bath (rock bathtub)
Wow, that's so luxurious overflowing. Surprisingly, maybe there is a large amount of hot spring water.
Only one bathtub, it's simple. But, the atmosphere isn't bad, you know.
The water feels fresh and soft. In short, it's a good onsen.
This water is lukewarm. And a bit brownish?
Hmm, I'm not sure, but I don't think it's brown.
Maybe it just seemed that way because the lighting was dim.
As a side note, the private bath is like that.
After enjoying the bath, Nishi-san and Kita-san are resting in the breaking room.
breaking room
Phew, it was pretty good. The overflowing water was luxurious, and I feel it made my skin smoother. I think, Yumura Onsen could get becoming more popular.
That may be true. I had an image of Yumura Onsen being plain, but it wasn't actually like that... No, actually, it is plain after all. The bathtub is small and there is no open-air bath, then.
I know, you'd say that, the open-air bath lovers...
Yumura Onsen, which seems to have been left behind by the times. But now, it is undergoing redevelopment in an attempt to bring back its former bustle. Nishi-san and Kita-san wondered how it would have changed the next time they visited here.
(October 2023)
♨ Until a few years ago, the rock bathtub and marble bathtub were heated. (Now all the baths are unheated).
Impression & rating
The hot spring water is plentiful. You can enjoy the luxurious and unheated flowing from the source. The old building looks antique and nice.
3.0 pt
Impression & rating
It has no open-air bath, no view from the bathing room, and just only one bathtub. So it lacks entertainment value.

Today Beer
Obina Beer
(left:Obina Double IPA、right:Obina Fresh Hop Ale)
A little surprising was that the varieties of hops were listed on the cans. They say that they use "Citra & Mosaic" for the Double IPA, and "Chinook & Cascade" for the Fresh Hop Ale. It may seem a bit niche to mention hop brands, but it shows how confident and proud they are in their hops. In terms of taste, the Double IPA had a fresh with herbal flavor, and the Fresh Hop Ale had a fragrant grain aroma. Both were delicious beers, so I think Obina Beer will become even more popular in the future.
